As funny as this exercise looks it is a very effective way to build capacity and fatigue resistance in the hamstrings, especially in their action as knee flexors. The fast nature of the exercise puts a large load into the tendons of the hamstrings, working on the stretch-shortening-cycle (SSC) component of their function. The SSC is the mechanism related to the quick storage and release of elastic energy in the musculotendinous unit (muscle and tendon complex), this puts a high amount of stress into these tissues via speed of movement rather than an actual heavy weight or load.
